What is Social Work?Printer-friendly version

Change Yourself, Change Your World

Social Work is a helping profession for those with a spark of idealism, a belief in social justice, and a natural love of working with people.  It is a professional activity concerned with improving the lives of people and includes helping individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities to enhance their well-being and improve their quality of life.  Social work is committed to the dual focus of helping people and changing environments.  Social workers are concerned with social problems, their causes, their solutions and their human impacts.

Thank you for your interest in Booth College’s Social Work Programs.  We offer professional social work education in two formats.  The four year program is for students who enter directly from high school or transfer students who do not possess an undergraduate degree.  The two year After Degree Program is for students who already possess an undergraduate degree.  Courses are available days, evenings, through distance education and one week intensive formats.

As a social work professional you will discover endless career opportunities.  Social Work is a profession that will continue to offer numerous employment opportunities in the years ahead.  It is a profession that will allow you to help others, to create the kind of world we all want to live, and find great personal satisfaction.

The faculty of the Department of Social Work are eager to share information about our programs with you.  If you are not sure whether social work is a career of interest for you, we invite you to watch What is Social Work or On Any Given Day, Social Workers Help videos produced in the United States on the Social Work profession.

On Any Given Day
