
Susan Mair, MSW
Instructor
Susan Mair comes to Booth College with many years of experience working in the field of Social Work. Areas of particular interest and experience include women's issues, poverty, violence, palliative care, community development and voluntary simplicity. At Booth College, Susan has taught courses on Violence and Social Policy.
For several years, Susan has worked in community health settings. Currently, Susan works with The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority in the Prehabilitation Surgery Program. In this setting Susan is able to demonstrate her assessment and counselling skills in the areas of crisis intervention, mental health, addictions, and health promotion.
Susan has a BA in Sociology from University of Manitoba, an Honours BSW and MSW with a Specialization in Women's Studies from Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, Ontario. Susan's graduate work focused on feminist research perspectives. In 2001, Susan was awarded the Ontario Graduate Scholarship for Highest Achievement. In her teaching Susan seeks understanding of forces that promote and sustain oppression and discrimination and in turn create opportunities for students' self awareness to foster greater appreciation for societal divisions and hierarchies.
For a number of years, both as a graduate student and as a social worker, Susan has been involved in various community groups including The Palliative Care Pain and Symptom Management Team, The Cerebral Palsy Association of Manitoba and was a board member with LITE (Local Investment Towards Employment).
For weekend activities, Susan and her husband are active in their church community and enjoy cross country skiing in the winter and cycling in the summer.
