Michael Boyce, PhD
Assistant Professor of English
Michael Boyce joins the Booth College community to build a new program of English and Film Studies. He has taught film and literature courses at Booth, Providence College and the University of Manitoba.
Michael has a BA (Hons) and MA from Wilfrid Laurier University and has recently completed his PhD at the University of Manitoba under the supervision of Professor George Toles. His dissertation examined socio-economic and cultural influences on British films made in the ten years immediately following World War 2 (1945-55). He has written and presented papers on Katherine Philips, Edgar Allan Poe, Alfred Hitchcock, David Lean and Alec Guinness. He is currently working on projects as diverse as post-war film adaptations of Charles Dickens, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and “Arrested Development.”
In the classroom, Michael wants to engage his student with texts – be it literature or film – in new and exciting ways, encouraging them to bring their own perspectives to class and to be open to the perspectives of others.
In his spare time, Michael enjoys reading and watching theatre, films and TV on DVD with his wife, Rachel. And he firmly believes that there are few things more enjoyable than good food with good friends.
