Food Bank Organizers, Students & Volunteers Debate Food Security in Winnipeg

According to Food Banks Canada, nearly 795,000 people were assisted by a food bank in Canada.  This is an 18% increase compared to the same period in 2008 and the largest year-over-year increase on record.  The demand for food assistance is especially great in Manitoba where almost 4% of the population depend upon food banks for emergency food assistance. Due to the economic downturn, many Winnipeggers have stepped through the door of a food bank for the first time ever and 37% of those helped have been children.

Food banks provide an essential community service; however, their voluntary status means they too struggle.  31% report running out of food while 36% have distributed less food than usual due to rising demand during the recession.  To compound the problem, 28% of food banks across the country report inadequate funding.  Systemic problems associated with a changing economy, job losses, and stagnant incomes have sparked civic engagement to ensure justice for the most vulnerable members of our population. As a result, Booth College is hosting its first annual Booth College Service Learning Forum on April 17th to engage local service providers and high school students in the debate over food security.  Dr Sherrie Steiner, Head of the Behavioural Sciences program at Booth College says, “Food bank critics sometimes contend that flourishing food banks inhibit passage of more just legislation by ameliorating the most visible urban crisis that might grab media attention.”  Steiner adds, “This forum will bring together representatives from a diverse set of perspectives to facilitate thoughtful discussion about food security in Winnipeg.”  Local high school students will also be presenting their ideas during a student roundtable session.  If you are interested in exploring some practical ideas about how to meaningfully respond to the situation, then join us for:
