Classification Numbers

The items you need will likely be found in the following area:
BF: Psychology
BF 600's: Interpersonal communication, counseling, counseling issues and personality development
HQ: Social issues (for example, abuse, pornography) dealt with from a sociological viewpoint
HV: Social Work and social issues as they relate to social work (for example, criminal justice issues)
R's: The R section deals with issues from a medical or science point of view.
RC: Social issues with a medical component (for example, anorexia, HIV, suicide, death and dying, drug therapy, addictions.)

Reference Material

The reference material is located on the main floor of the library. Reference material is intended for use in the library only. Students may photocopy the pages they need.

Newspapers

Newspapers carry important information for Social Work students. The most recent issues are on the 1st floor coffee table. Older issues are in the cabinet by the front entrance. WCBC usually keeps 2 or 3 months of back issues. WCBC subscribes to:

· Globe and Mail
· National Post
· Winnipeg Free Press
Note that the Globe and Mail is an internationally recognized newspaper and it is an important source of information for Canadian Social Workers.

The University of Winnipeg has older back issues on microfilm and they also have fulltext databases of many newspapers.

 

Journals

 

The following journals deal with Social Work topics. Booth Library has either a current subscription or backissues of all of these titles. They are of primary importance:

Caring: A Journal of the Integrated Ministries of The Salvation Army
(formerly Journal of Rehabilitation and Recovery) - This is a Salvation Army journal but it is located with the regular journals because of its scholarly content.

- This is a Government Publication located with the regular journals.

Canadian Association of Social Workers
Information about social work training and practice in Canada.

National Association for Social Workers (USA)
The Web site of the professional association of American social workers. This site includes a catalogue of publications, the NASW Code of Ethics, accreditation information and links to job resources. It is also a useful tool for keeping up to date with social issues of current concern in the United States.

Social Work in Canada

SOSIG Social Sciences Information Gateway
Collections of selected quality Internet information. Two sections of particular interest are Social Science General and Social Welfare. Within these sections sites are organized by publication type such as articles, papers and reports, journals, government publications, discussion groups, etc. Annotations are provided. UK focus.

Internet Social Worker
